What is NERIS?
NERIS — the National Emergency Response Information System — is the federal incident reporting platform for every U.S. fire department — career, combination, and volunteer alike — developed by the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) in partnership with the U.S. Fire Administration. It replaces NFIRS, the system departments reported through for the past four decades.
The transition is already complete: NFIRS stopped accepting new incident reports on January 1, 2026 and was fully decommissioned the following month. Since February 2026, NERIS has been the nation's only fire incident data system. If your department responds to calls, your reports belong in NERIS.
NERIS is cloud-based and API-first, with a modern all-hazards data model covering fire, EMS, rescue, and hazmat. That's good news for the fire service — and it means your records software needs to speak NERIS natively.
How FireOps1 handles NERIS reporting
